Job Description
The Sawyer Basic is responsible for clearing complex trails at varying grades while felling trees with accuracy to protect on-mountain assets. The Sawyer Basic will be a part of the build of wood features for the Trails Department. This position reports to the Trails Director.

Essential Job Function/ Key Job Responsibilities
- Fell trees accurately to avoid lifts, buildings, power lines, etc.
- Fell trees in challenging conditions such as steep, rocky, slick, tangled, snow covered mountain terrain.
- Evaluate risks in felling conditions, review applicable Job Hazard Analysis and complete Felling Complexity Analysis.
- Fell, limb, deck and buck timber safely in jack straw or technical conditions.
- Perform basic maintenance on equipment.
- Attend annual chain saw safety training.
- Attend fire prevention training.
- Responsible for the Chainsaw/Brush Saw Equipment of the Department
Qualifications
Education & Experience Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Valid, current unrestricted Driver’s License required
- Current Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR and First Aid Certification preferred
- High school degree or equivalent preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- 1 year of saw experience with demonstrated felling ability
- Comfortable working on mountain terrain including steep grades
- Ability to work in collaboration with others to achieve team goals
- Follows all safety policies and procedures and exercises caution when working
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Additional Information
Supervision given and received
Supervision given: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Supervision received: Works under direct supervision of the Trails Manager. Tasks are assigned according to specific procedures, and work is checked frequently. Instruction, advice and feedback are readily provided.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Ability to reach, crouch, kneel, stand or be on your feet, kneel and bend for extended periods of time
- Regularly work in adverse conditions and required to use protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials as well as an office environment and may be required to walk on slippery and uneven surfaces. Must be able to lift, push or pull up to 50 lbs. individually
